emerged to be Aicha Hamdaoui, who was crowned by outgoing queen Amina Hansal. The new Miss will represent
her province in the upcoming Miss Algeria pageant.
The problems facing the Miss Algeria pageant

According to a recent interview with the national director of the pageant, the absence
of Algeria in most international pageants is due to the lack of financial sponsoring which includes the franchise fees
($30,000-$40,000 biennial for Miss World), airfare, the cost of wardrobe and the training of the representative. Nonetheless
and with enough sponsoring he revealed that Miss Algeria 2009 will compete in Miss Tourism Queen International, and possibly
Miss World. He also revealed that Algeria did well in international pageants, ranking 26th in Miss World
2002, 3rd in Miss Mediterranean 2004, 3rd in Miss Africa 2005 and 2nd in Golden Fortune Top Model International 2005.

Modeling in Algeria, an Insider's look.

"10 000 DA per Catwalk"
Our
immersion into the modeling arena in Algeria made us realize that besides fame and stardom, the aspirations of many models
are materialistic. Leila, a 23 y/o model says:
"Of course, it's a well paying job but not an easy one. We have
to exhaust ourselves working out and maintaining a strict diet to keep in shape. True, we do get paid more than 10 000 DA
per catwalk, but this little amount of work would cost us days of preparation and an infinite list of prohibitions".
The same cannot be said for male models, Fouad, 25, says :" My salary as a male model does not cover my living
expenses . Male models receive half the salary of their female counterparts, which obliged me to sign a contract with an agency
and receive a fixed salary regardless of the amount of work I do."
A model's salary is not only determined by
their gender but also their classification within the industry. Agencies classify models into different categories, determined
by the model's look, background and education level. Some models are classified as Top Models and are sent to Europe for professional
training by which they can sign contracts with international agencies. Such was the case with Lamia, 24 :" I'm a graduate
of mass communication but I started modeling since I was 16. I work with many national and international agencies and I receive
a minimum monthly salary of 3000 Euros".
"The average model spends a monthly 20 000 DA on
beauty products"
Karim, a 23 y/o model says :" My appearance is the most important thing. I have to be
elegant on a daily basis starting from my hairstyle to my clothes, perfumes and other accessories that I have to buy on a
constant basis to keep up with fashion. The nature of my work requires me to because at any moment I can meet with an agent
or a designer and their first impression on me determines if I can get the job or not. I buy a monthly 20 000 DA worth of
beauty products that include facial creams and herbal oils to maintain and revitalize my skin. I also wear colored lenses
to enhance my look but haven't undergone any plastic surgeries."
Leila however, admits to having been under the
knife :" I'm confident with my beauty but I did get a small nose job to enhance my facial features, it was nothing major".
"A Model's diet: A carrot and a fruit per day, and a whole list of forbidden foods"
Karim says:" A model has to sacrifice a lot to succeed. I'm willing to lose half my weight if asked. Honestly
I deprive myself of many foods and dishes I love like Couscous, Pizza, Karantita, sodas and other things, but as I said I'm
willing for anything to succeed."
Leila, on the other hand, says: "Starving oneself is unhealthy and not
worth the state of depression that can result from it. I do eat whatever I please including fatty foods but in measured amounts
and with a daily weight check-up. In case I cross the red line I would follow an intense diet for a week or two to lose the
excess weight. For example if I want to lose 5 kilos within a week my daily diet would consist of a vegetable stew, a carrot
and a fruit and the next day I replace the carrot with a cup of milk."
"Contracts oblige
models to wear skimpy clothing"
Leila says about this issue:" I don't like to sign long term contracts
but "one time" deals because even though contracts give me legal protection they also include many hidden and unacceptable
obligations. Many models with contracts have to model certain items even if against their will like skimpy lingerie which
I refuse to appear with in public."

A Fashion Show Reunites Former Beauty Queens

Meriem, the other two beauty queens pursued successful acting careers and became national celebrities.
